Kitten's First Full Moon - Caldecott Winner 2005

I remember when I was working at our local library as I was taking classes at Western for my undergrad, Kitten's First Full Moon had just been chosen as that year's Caldecott winner book. When the book arrived at our library, I was the first to check it out because I wanted to go home and read it, I have always loved children's books!

What first struck me as unique about this book, was the lack of any color on the illustrations. With a title like it has, I was expecting bright colorful pages to reflect the full moon. Maybe the illustrator chose the gray and white drawings to show the brightness of the moon by opposing it to the dark gray?

With, or without colorful illustrations, this book tells the story of a young, curious kitten out on a quest!

This is the story of a young kitten who spots her first full moon in the sky, and mistakenly takes the moon, for a little bowl of milk. The kitten tries so hard to get a tiny lick of milk, that she ends up with a bug on her tongue! The determined kitten then only tries harder by trying to pounce on the moon, but then falls and bumps her head and banged her ear...

As I was reading this entertaining story, I found myself feeling a little like the determined kitten. There have been times that I have seen something and wanted it so bad, that I would do anything and everything to have it. Just like the kitten wants the milk.

After several more attempts at reaching the "bowl of milk" the kitten decides to climb a tree, but she only finds herself in a predicament..she is stuck!

*Have you ever been in a predicament before? A predicament is a fancy word for "difficult situation". Maybe your determination, put you in a predicament!

Eventually, the tiny kitten jumped out of the tree into a pond, felt defeated and went home. But, guess what was at home waiting for her on the porch...her own little bowl of milk!

This book teaches a lesson to any reader! No matter how bad you think you want or need something, chances are, you don't really need it at all.
