My Friend Rabbit - Caldecott Winner 2003

"But Rabbit means well. And he is my friend."

I decided to check this book out and read it, because it is a favorite among my 2nd graders.

Before I read the book, I flipped through the pages to observe the striking illustrations! I love Eric Rohmann's colorful, and sharp drawings that seem to pop out as you turn the pages. The emotions of the characters come to life through his paintbrush! My favorite illustration occurs when all the angry animals are crowded together conversing about the rabbit. You can see the anger, frustration, and worry one each of their faces.

The plot of the book describes Rabbit and Mouse and their quest to get their toy airplane out of the tree. Rabbit and Mouse are best friends, but Mouse knows that wherever Rabbit goes, trouble is sure to follow! Sure enough, Rabbit gets them into trouble, but through it all, Mouse stays loyal to Rabbit and continues to be his best friend, no matter what the consequences.

I love how this book teaches the lesson of true friendship. Much like kids, and adults, we all have at least one friend who gets in more "trouble" than us. Mouse teaches us that true friendship can overcome all obstacles.

I remember a time when I was in elementary school, my best friend forgot her homework. Although this was common for her, this was very uncommon for me! I knew that she would get in trouble, so I spent the bus ride to school helping her with her homework. Instead of letting her get into trouble when she got to school, I chose to be a good friend and help her complete her homework.

Has their ever been a time when you or your friend got into a mess, but your friendship stayed strong? What about a time that you have been a good friend to others? I'd love to hear your stories!
